Elan Gets First Swimming Lesson at 7 Months

Elan did a great job in the swimming pool this last weekend. He went underwater a few times and was pretty brave about the idea of ‘going under’. The instructor liked how comfortable he was in the water (thanks to his recent new baths in the tub, shhh!). I was a proud Papa that day!

MacBook Pro Solid State Option

OK I’m currently drooling over the new solid state option in the refreshed 2008 Macbook Pro. I’ve seen youtube videos where it plain boots the OS and apps faster. Very exciting stuff. Way less moving parts and just so cool. Where it still hurts in in the pricing and disc capacity - but for early adopters it still might be worth it!

Use AE Lock for locking into the Exposure You Really Want

When shooting subjects that are back lit (strong light source behind them) and you want to avoid a strong silhoutte of the subject, get up close on the subject (droping out any background highlights such as the sky and use the AE Lock (*) button) to lock the exposure) then exposure will be locked. Recompose your picture and watch your subject come to life in your next picture! You might get a blown out background - but who cares since now you can see your subjects clearly.

40d Custom Function Tips (disable shutter release focus & turn high ISO 3200 on)

If you only focus with the back AF-ON button and disable the shutter auto focus button do this:

Turn the Camera On
Hit Menu, Go to Custom Functions (Orange Camera Icon on Right)
Scroll to Custom Funtion IV (4) and Select
On 1, (Shutter button/AF-ON Button) Select 2

To Enable the high ISO (3200/H) feature:

Go to Custom Function I (1) and Select
On Setting 3 (ISO Expansion) select 1(On)

Now hit the shutter release to go back into shooting mode and then hit the top ISO button, use the top scroll wheel and go past ISO 1600 to level “H” which is short for ISO 3200!

*Warning, Custom Function II (2), number 3 Highlight Tone Priority - when turned on you lose the ISO 3200 H feature!

Turn on high ISO noise reduction (warning this slows capturing a little since it takes more processing, but the effects are worth it!)

Go to Custom Functions II (2) Select
Go to 2, Set to 1 (On)
